Traditional Mehndi Designs: Background and Style
Henna comes from the plant Lawsonia inermis, and its leaves have been used to dye skin, hair and nails for thousands of years. The practice is shared across South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The dye in henna, lawsone, binds to keratin in the skin, which is why the stain lasts until the skin sheds. Traditional South Asian motifs include the paisley (also called ambi or mango), the peacock and the lotus.
Common motifs
- paisley (ambi)
- peacocks
- lotus
- jaal (net)
- round tikki
- vines and leaves
Application tips
- Use fresh natural henna paste; old or chemical cones give a weak or unsafe stain.
- Traditional designs are dense, so work in sections and keep the lines close.
- Seal the dried paste with lemon and sugar to keep it on the skin longer.
