Rajasthani Mehndi Designs: Background and Style
Rajasthani, or Marwari, mehndi is known for dense, very fine detail that covers the whole hand. Sojat, in Rajasthan's Pali district, is India's best-known henna-growing area. Designs often include figures such as a bride and groom, peacocks and elephants. Mirrored designs, where the two hands form one picture when held together, are a hallmark of the style.
Common motifs
- bride and groom figures
- peacocks
- elephants
- fine jaal (net) fills
- mirrored panels
- dense borders
Application tips
- Use a very fine cone tip; Rajasthani detail is too small for a standard tip.
- Divide the hand into panels first and fill one at a time.
- Allow plenty of time, since dense coverage takes much longer than open styles.
